My American Dream

From our cramped boats
We see the gleaming city.
Full of our dreams and hopes,
We leave behind turmoil and pity.
Holding up a beacon of light,
Lady Liberty welcomes us in.
It is an awe-inspiring sight.
This is where my new life will begin.
We finally step onto their shores
But will I pass their test?
Or will they shut their doors,
Sending me back like all the rest.
I pass through their gates.
I am now a citizen of
These Great United States,
The country of freedom and of love.
I will climb my way to the top
No matter how hard it may seem.
I will not slacken; I will not stop
Until I achieve my American dream

  1. Hi, wondering if you know how to get in touch with the author of this poem? I'm working with someone who's writing a memoir of his immigration to the US and wants to quote the poem -- would like to get the author's permission. Could you please contact me at writinghelp21 [at] gmail [dot] com and let me know if you have any info about the author? Thanks.
